Using solar energy to reduce our environmental footprint

In 2007, we invested in a solar “farm” on vacant land next to our building. To celebrate our 72nd year in business, and with the help of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s California Solar Initiative, we decided to go back to our roots of using solar power to produce our products. For the first 20 years of operation, Sunnyland Mills used the sun to dry the cooked wheat berries. We now use the sun to generate 171,216 kilowatts of power annually to help run our plant. By doing this, we are saving approximately 212,307 lbs. (106 tons) of Carbon Dioxide — CO2 from going into the atmosphere. Additionally, 1,883 lbs. of Nitrous Oxide — NO2 and 189 lbs. of Sulphur Dioxide — SO2 will be saved by our generation of solar power.

Other environmentally friendly things we do

We use skylights in our plant to reduce lighting.

We use recyclable products to package our products.

We treat our effluent to remove most of the starch in our waste water.
